Dementia is a general term used for loss of memory or cognitive ability that can disrupt everyday life. There are different types of dementia, such as Alzheimer’s Disease, Vascular Dementia, Mixed Dementia, Parkinson’s Dementia, Bodies Dementia, and others. Alzheimer’s disease is the most common, accounting for 60-80% of dementia cases.
Symptoms of early Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia typically include difficulty concentrating and remembering simple items or tasks, such as activities of daily living. In later stages, someone may be unable to care for themselves without assistance, particularly in any of the activities of daily living. Advanced symptoms like confusion, withdrawal, wandering, and getting lost can present a challenge for families. In-home care for people with Alzheimer’s or dementia is one way to give them the help they need in a familiar environment. The goal is always to maintain as much independence at home for as long as possible.
